The Fourth Trimester.
I always went with four months; it’s a ‘period of time that takes you from your baby’s birth, to three months’.
I went with four, because that was the time their little heads peeped - bobbing and inquisitive - above the parapet that was the sling that held them close.
Just as they had transitioned from womb to world, now they were transitioning from wrap to world, unfolding gently into the bright lights of the life around them.
I moved slowly, my baby close.
I danced to a strange rhythm of asleep and awake.
I allowed for chaos and calm.
I forgave the feelings,
I thanked the feelings,
I sat in the feelings.
Postnatal doula support is seeing all of this in complete understanding.
Because that’s what we do; quietly, and upholding your intuition to do any - and all - of the above, so that when your head peeps above the parapet of parenthood - bobbing and inquisitive - you are held close.
