With Woman; International Day of the Midwife (IDM).

With Woman.

These two women, from Lincoln County Hospital, supported my first step into motherhood in 2008.

I am about 4 hours post emergency abdominal birth and the midwife on the right sat by my bedside reading a book during those first hours; gently passing me my baby for feeding and copious amounts of skin to skin moments.

I remember asking for this photo to be taken because I wanted to consciously mark the moment.

I am 25, and at that point, definitely questioned if I was in fact qualified to care for a tiny human; he’s still alive 13 years later, so that’s something.

I am also a bit sad about how much iodine they sloshed over my lovely white nightie in the hurry to surgery; I never cared about what I’d wear for birth ever again.

“This year’s International Day of the Midwife (IDM) on 5th May 2021 is being celebrated under the theme of “Follow the Data: Invest in Midwives”. The day coincides with the launch of the 2021 State of the World's Midwifery (SoWMy) Report. Developed by UNFPA (the UN sexual and reproductive health agency), WHO (World Health Organization) and International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), the report evaluates the midwifery workforce and related health resources in 194 countries and includes policy recommendations to improve sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health service delivery.” @who
